Paraguay or Panama: how to compare two relocation plans

Start with your circumstances, then explore the options

Write down each person’s nationality, how long you intend to stay, the income you expect to keep and the work you want to do locally. Add your constraints: the school calendar, time you need to spend with clients, the language of daily life and trips back to your departure country.

In Paraguay, the National Directorate of Migration publishes a temporary residency procedure with a document checklist and rules for legalisation and translation. In Panama, the National Migration Service lists several permit categories. Your first task is to identify the one that fits your circumstances before comparing the procedures.

Check the professional side separately

Describe your work precisely: local employment, remote services, trade or running a company. In Panama, the Ministry of Labour publishes work authorisation categories and identifies regulated professions. Confirm which rules apply to you before setting a date to start work.

If you are considering an EAS in Paraguay, check the requirements for its legal representative in particular. The Ministry of Industry and Commerce specifies electronic identity and Paraguayan identity card requirements for that role. Being a shareholder and being able to represent the company are two separate questions to examine.

Compare an ordinary week of life

For each destination, choose two neighbourhoods and map out an ordinary day: the school run, commuting, shopping and returning home. Ask schools about places for your children’s ages, the teaching language and a full fee quote. Keep the date and the name of your contact.

For housing, compare offers with similar rental periods, floor areas and facilities. Distinguish temporary accommodation from a lease for your longer-term home. A price mentioned in a video is not enough to build your own plan.

• Household: school, housing, access to healthcare and journeys to try.
• Work: contact person, authorisations to check and conditions for starting.
• Commitments: refundable expenses, deposits and decision deadlines.

Use the scouting trip to make a decision

Arrange a few useful appointments and group visits by area. After each visit, record what is confirmed, what you dislike and what still needs checking. Follow one simple rule: a school without a confirmed place, or work arrangements that remain uncertain, is still an open issue.
